Thanks for your posters-like Megan's above -they were all in on time ! They weren't too bad as a first submission. I've posted them as separate posts above. I would like you all to take a moment to a view and understand them. Then could you please submit brief constructive comments and critique about them [ including your own work and with a view to improving all the designs} clcik on images to enlarge . The words "cool," "wow," "great" , "awesome" or the phrase "Oh my God!" should not be overused [ gut or emotional reactions are welcomed] visual communication terminology and close critical analysis is expected.

6:The "Full Blown Draft" Proposal with Gareth's blessing

Well Gareth has graciously consented to the posting of his "full blown draft" proposal for the project Here We Are! The music design experience and thank you for that- it sets a nice standard, and a pace for the group. AS he said "its a living document"

The simple and elegant process is that this text-based proposal has been driven from the "dumb" course proposal [check list] template and developed quickly and tangibly through a compelling visual language. It has a life and feel of its own it is also part of an open dialogue.

The "hook" or structure is directly related to the research question "how will music be packaged ?" So the "sleeve notes" and images for CDs are the mode for communicating the proposal....at least for the time being. The imagery of the labyrinth of corridors and concourses give a hint of where the project will take the author [and us] without pre-guessing the outcome. A good start to a design project

The first semester involves a lot of overlapping phases of the project a developed proposal becomes a plan and all the while research through analysis turns information into knowledge and conceptual design attempts to redefine the project objectives .

Gareth submitted this sublime time line in the context of the "living document"which is the draft proposal. And boy is it alive...A life of its own and a personality to boot! Good! Its jumped [mutated] from the text checklist based on the template and into something that reflects the project journey.Its moving fast. Sure there there is missing detail but that can be added later and perhaps just get transferred directly into the project plan. A good example of how you can design a start, enjoy PDFs and start to merge the phases without actually trying to pre guess the outcome of the research and experimentation stage . Good O !

Does this Brisbane studio offer a role model for socially concerned design?
In 2000, a small, not widely known design company in Brisbane called Inkahoots published a book celebrating its first ten years. The images were intriguing but what really struck me were the book’s three texts. ‘We work mainly in the community and cultural sectors,’ wrote Inkahoots’ directors, Robyn McDonald and Jason Grant. ‘Not just because that’s where the best work is, but because we figure our environment is already cluttered with sophisticated corporate imagery that often doesn’t represent the community’s best interests. Alternative visual messages struggle to be heard above the rowdy din of dominant media. They need to communicate incisively with compelling power and drama, or even quietly with careful subtlety, just to compete.’

This was unusual. In the space of just 72 words, Inkahoots had used the word ‘community’ twice, evoking ideas about culture’s purpose from the years before Reagan and Thatcher. By the 1990s, an ideologically defined conception of community had more or less disappeared from discussions about design. Young designers might encounter such ideas from older teachers, but they would not be perceived as central or receive any reinforcement from design’s professional organisations and publications. Yet here was a fiery sounding team of idealists in Queensland placing ‘community’ at the heart of its practice. What was it about Brisbane, I wondered, that encouraged this way of thinking and working? Might Inkahoots’ approach be a paradigm for designers seeking to pursue socially concerned forms of design practice?
